Dear Cotati-Rohnert Park School Community,
We are looking forward to an exciting 2016-17 school year! I’m now in my sixth year and it’s an honor to continue serving as Superintendent for Cotati-Rohnert Park Unified School District. We’re proud to be a district that is creating innovative programs, opening schools, attracting students and preparing them for college and careers.
Last year in November we extended our local parcel tax, which provides stable funding that the state cannot take away or dictate how we spend. The Board of Trustees has used these critical funds to maintain smaller class sizes, which ensures a more individualized education, strengthen our libraries, increase our technology and improve our career technical education for students.
We are committed to providing all of the educational options families need here in our community. Following the passage of Measure B in June of 2014, we quickly began implementing projects in our master plan to improve our educational facilities. We have new buildings, new technology and new playgrounds. We rebuilt Thomas Page Academy, which is our country K-8 school in Cotati, and we are in the process of rebuilding Rancho Cotate High School. We are finishing Phase 1, which was focused on exterior renovations and improvements and Phase 2 will begin construction in 2016. Phase 2 includes a new Theater/Academic/Gymnasium Building that will be the biggest and best in the Bay Area!
We are asking the voters for our community to pass another bond authorization so we can continue with the work of the Facilities Master Plan that was developed in 2013. We want to continue making safety and instructional improvements at all of our school campuses.
In our elementary schools we still have smaller class sizes kindergarten through third grade, physical education, music and other enrichment classes. This year we expanded our libraries and technology labs even more. Both of our middle schools have comprehensive programs to meet the needs of the students in core academics and enrichment. We have an outdoor education program, Expeditionary Learning, extracurricular sports, intramural sports, clubs and opportunities for student leadership.
Rancho Cotate High School is the most comprehensive high school in the Bay Area. It has a great core program, flexible learning schedules, advanced placement, vocational education and a great student body. Last year we improved library access by adding a certified librarian to the campus full-time. Technology High School, located at Sonoma State University, is a California Distinguished School and continues to be one of the highest scoring schools academically in the state. The sports program and extracurricular programs continue to expand and improve.
This year we pledge to continue working on our goals of improving student achievement and increasing student enrollment and we were successful.
Everything is awesome! Let's have a great 2016-17 School Year!
Dr. Robert A. Haley, Ed.D.
