Home and Hospital Instruction Program
Sometimes students need time away from school to focus on their health. Our Home and Hospital Instruction Program is here to make sure learning continues during that time. While your child is recovering at home or receiving care in the hospital, a caring, credentialed teacher will provide personalized instruction to help them stay on track with their classes.
The Home and Hospital Instruction (HHI) Program is a state-authorized instructional service designed to provide temporary academic support to students who are unable to attend school due to a verified physical or mental health condition. Instruction is delivered by credentialed teachers and is intended to maintain continuity of the student’s educational program during the period of absence
Eligibility requires medical verification from a licensed healthcare provider and approval through the district’s application process. HHI is not intended to replace a long-term educational placement but to serve as a short-term intervention helping students bridge the gap until they’re ready to return to school. Our team works closely with families, healthcare providers, and school staff to make the process as smooth as possible.

Home and Hospital Instruction (HHI) Program Policy
Pursuant to California Education Code § 48206.3, the District shall provide Home and Hospital Instruction (HHI) to students with a temporary disability that makes attendance in a regular day class or alternative educational program impossible or inadvisable.
Definition of Temporary Disability
A temporary disability is defined as a physical, mental, or emotional condition that is expected to improve and from which the student may reasonably be expected to return to a regular educational setting. This definition excludes students identified as having exceptional needs under Education Code § 56026.

Eligibility and Referral Process
To begin the process:
- A parent/guardian shall notify the school of the student’s condition and request consideration for HHI services.
- Verification of the medical condition from a licensed healthcare provider is required Physician’s Form
- Verification must include a specific start date and specific end date, diagnosis, and signature of a licensed healthcare provider.
- The physician’s statement must include diagnosis and duration. Dates must be specific. Duration can be no less than 3 weeks and no more than 6 months
- Team meeting will be scheduled with parent/guardian/student to discuss student needs and determine best placement.
- If a student is ready to return to school prior to their end date, a release from the doctor is required with any accommodations listed
- If a student needs an extension, an updated statement from the physician is required.
Instructional Services
- Instruction is provided by credentialed teachers for the purpose of maintaining continuity with the student’s current course of study.
- One (1) clock hour of individual instruction is equivalent to one (1) day of attendance. No more than five (5) days of attendance may be claimed per calendar week.
- The combined average daily attendance (ADA) for the District of residence and the District providing HHI (if different) shall not exceed the number of days in the regular school calendar.
District of Residence
If a student is confined to a hospital or residential health facility outside of the boundaries of their home district, the district in which the hospital/facility is located may be deemed the student’s district of residence for purposes of providing HHI.
Return to School
When the student is determined to be able to return during the same school year, the student shall be entitled to return to their school of origin, including charter schools, consistent with Education Code requirements. Students may also participate in partial-week attendance when health permits.
Students with Disabilities
Nothing in this policy shall limit or supersede the rights of students with disabilities as defined under Education Code § 56026. If the student is an individual with exceptional needs and has an active Individualized Education Program (IEP), the IEP team shall determine appropriate services, including home instruction if necessary.
