Frequently Asked Questions
What curriculum will be used?
We partner with Imagine Learning to provide a flexible, online curriculum aligned to the Common Core, NGSS and California State standards. Imagine Learning offers a full suite of Edgenuity online learning solutions for our District. Edgenuity incorporates intuitive technology that gives our educators the resources they need to plan lessons, engage students, execute goals, measure success, and intervene when necessary.
How will instruction happen?
Students are able to schedule one on one tutorial appointments with their Instructors as needed.
What does the day look like for my student?
Students will receive assignments from Edgenuity. There is a Course Map that informs the student what is due each day. The student will work through the curriculum independently with the support of a parent/caretaker. A recommended daily schedule will be provided to each student. The student will be expected to complete the assignments by the due dates. Opportunities for extra support and enrichment will be provided.
Can my student shift from the Virtual Academy to traditional learning?
Students are strongly encouraged to commit to their program of choice for the school year. Parents can explore the option of switching to traditional learning at each grading period. In this case, every effort will be made to place the student at their regular school of attendance. If the choice is made to switch to traditional learning, a shift back to the Virtual Academy may not be an option.
Can my student participate in extracurricular activities at their school of record?
Your student is still identified as a student of your school of record. Efforts will be made to accommodate these requests. All extra-curricular activities that are available at the school site are available for your student as well. Transportation to participate in activities must be provided by the parent/caretaker.
Will my student have access to nutrition services?
Yes. Meal pick up information will be provided.
Will my student be eligible to attend a four year college or university? (A-G approved)
Yes. Students have the opportunity to meet with their counselor to determine the best academic plan. The Virtual Academy offers courses that are A-G (college preparatory high school classes) approved. The lab sciences may require in-person activities.
What if my child has an IEP?
All students are entitled to a Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE). Any student receiving Special Education services will require an IEP meeting prior to placement in the Virtual Learning Academy. The purpose of the meeting is to consider whether independent study in the VLA will meet your child’s educational needs as determined by their IEP. The IEP team will review goals and services and determine if Independent Study is an appropriate placement that can provide FAPE. Any related services would be provided either in person or virtually by appointment during school hours.
Are the teachers from their assigned school?
Students have a team of educators to support them. The teachers in the Virtual Learning Academy are your student’s Mentor Teachers. Our Mentor Teachers are experienced, credentialed educators employed by the Cotati-Rohnert Park Unified School District. In addition, your student will have an Edgenuity Instructor for each course. All Edgenuity Instructors are CA credentialed teachers in the specific subject area. Edgenuity Instructors are employed by Imagine Learning. Students will have a CRPUSD Mentor Teacher and Edgenuity Instructors.
Will Google classroom be used for assignments?
Assignments are embedded in the Edgenuity online curriculum platform. Google Classroom is used for Synchronous Session assignments and announcements and resources. Google Meet is used for all meetings, unless an in person meeting is requested.
Will there be interaction with other Virtual Academy students?
Yes. There will be opportunities for students to interact with each other and their teacher in synchronous sessions.
Will students have a choice to return to their regular school in person if and when they become fully vaccinated?
Students are strongly encouraged to commit to their program of choice for the school year. Parents can explore the option of switching to traditional learning at each grading period. In this case, every effort will be made to place the student at their regular school of attendance. If the choice is made to switch to in person learning, a shift back to the Virtual Academy may not be an option.
Will the schedule remain similar to the distance learning schedule or will it mirror the traditional school schedule?
The schedule will be different from both a traditional schedule and from a Distance Learning schedule.
Note: Distance Learning sunset in 2021.
Will there be any hybrid models available, e.g. M-W at home and Th - Fr on campus?
Students can request to participate in the Virtual Learning Academy and to take a course on campus. Students need to meet with their counselor to make the request and determine if the placement is appropriate and if scheduling will allow the request to be implemented.
What support will be offered if a student needs teacher help?
The students will have access to their CRPUSD teacher for help. Tutorial support both virtually and in person will be offered. Students have the ability to book one on one tutorial appointments with their Edgenuity Instructor. Additionally, students will have access to on demand tutoring provided by Imagine Learning.
Will my child continue to work with his usual speech therapist or case manager in the Virtual Academy?
The IEP team will determine if the Virtual Academy will provide Free Appropriate Public Education for the student. Students in the Virtual Academy with an IEP will have a case manager and any services that are designated in the IEP.
How will transitioning to a new school within the district work?
The Virtual Academy is a program of CRPUSD. A transition meeting with the administration and counselor will be scheduled to outline the transition plan and sign appropriate agreements.
When would we have to commit?
The Interest Form lets us know who is interested in participating in the Virtual Learning Academy. Think of this as the first step to "enrollment". The next step is to attend an Orientation Meeting. An additional meeting or phone call may be scheduled to discuss placement in the VLA.
Enrollment in the VLA occurs at the beginning of each quarter.
During each meeting with the teacher, approximately how many students will be in the group? And what will be the meeting duration?
Meetings with teachers will take place in various formats. Group size numbers will be informed by multiple factors that include enrollment numbers in addition to academic and social emotional needs.
Meetings can range from 10 minutes to 2 hours in length depending on the situation and student needs.
When does the Virtual Academy begin?
The Virtual Academy will follow the same schedule as the traditional CRPUSD student calendar.
